Kayaking and Canoeing: India’s Hidden Strengths in Water Sports

Kayaking and canoeing are rapidly gaining recognition in India, particularly in states like Kerala, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, where the natural landscape offers ideal conditions for these sports. The 2024 Asian Kayaking and Canoeing Championships saw the Indian men’s team secure a silver medal in the K-4 500-meter event, marking a significant achievement for the country.

The Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA) has been working tirelessly to promote these sports, especially in rural areas where rivers and lakes are plentiful. Training programs and national competitions are helping to develop young talent, and schools are increasingly including kayaking and canoeing in their sports curricula.

As the sport gains popularity, there is a growing demand for better infrastructure and coaching. International collaboration, especially with European and American organizations, is helping Indian athletes gain exposure to advanced techniques and equipment. With continued support, India’s kayaking and canoeing teams are expected to make waves in future global competitions.
