Kumanan’s achievement is a breakthrough for Indian sailing, as she became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in a major international sailing event.

The Yachting Association of India (YAI) has been instrumental in promoting sailing as both a recreational and competitive sport. Several sailing clubs in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kochi have emerged as centers for training, helping young sailors develop their skills. The Indian Navy has also been a significant contributor, with many of its personnel excelling in the sport.

However, challenges remain, particularly in terms of infrastructure and funding. Sailing equipment is expensive, and many promising athletes struggle with access to quality gear and training facilities.
